Tomahawk Lacrosse

Belizean hardwood lacrosse shafts

Tomahawk Lacrosse creates handmade lacrosse shafts made from the best woods available straight from Belize.  Every shaft we sell has been given individual care from machine cutting and shaping to finishing touches by hand.  The result: a quality made exotic hardwood lacrosse shaft. See the Construction Process for details.

Tomahawk Lacrosse was founded as a company that puts craftsmanship and quality first.  No detail is overlooked, from the initial selection of wood direct from Belize to the meticulous sanding process and the even coated polyurethane finish.  The result: A top tier lacrosse shaft that looks as good as it plays.

Wood Selection

Since Tomahawk Lacrosse was created I have built more shafts than I can count, experimenting with many different species of wood, testing them both through computer simulations analysis and real life experimentation.  After testing all existing woods that other wood companies in the market use, I connected with a sustainably sourced Belizean logger that delivers amazing quality wood and understands that I need the grain to run through the shaft and be free of any knots or other defects.  The wood I use is the best that I've found anywhere and makes an outstanding product.

Shaping

At this stage, the wood is shaped to the standard dimension octagonal shape with ultimate focus of keeping the grain running straight down the shaft.  This ensures maximum flexibility and strength, which is essential is a game.

Inspection

After the stick is the correct shape, I thoroughly inspect each shaft for any defects that were not visible before when the wood was still in boards.  I check for warping, knots, balance, and other weak spots, rejecting any flawed shafts to maintain the quality assurance that comes with the Tomahawk Lacrosse name.

Sanding

The sanding process begins with an electric hand sander. I start with a coarse grit to remove blade marks made from the shaping step. Then I make my way to finer sandpaper one step at a time until finishing by hand sanding down to ultra-fine 400 grit sandpaper to ensure a smooth finished product that really brings out the grain. If any shafts don't make the cut, once again they will be rejected.

Polyurethane Finish

The final step in the construction process is to apply polyurethane.  I apply each shaft with 3-4 coats of Minwax® clear satin spar urethane, which brings out the wood's natural grain, making it look 10 times better than before. The Minwax® will protect the shaft from changing color in the sun, from rain or moisture, and from the effects of temperature change.  This finishing process will last years without losing its amazing look as opposed to other beeswax or oil rubs that will quickly wash away. The end result: A beautiful, quality made Tomahawk Lacrosse exotic wood lacrosse shaft.
