Ziricote has perhaps some of the most unique grain structure of any wood in the world. The wood features frequent webbing, marbled swirling, and cloud bursting throughout with creates a truly breathtaking appearance that is sure to turn heads on the field and speaks to why the wood is often used for sculptures and fine works of art.
But don't let that fool you, Ziricote possesses great wood properties that make it suited for the lacrosse field. When selecting a wood for a bow (bow & arrow), the bow wood must be very flexible, but must also have a high bending strength to compensate for its flexibility and prevent failure. For this reason, the bow index was created to rate a wood's ability to bend and maintain strength, measured by dividing the bending strength by the wood's modulus of elasticity (in kpsi). Ziricote ranks exceptionally high with a bow index of 10.35, proving that the wood is good for more than just its good looks.
The heartwood is a dark reddish-brown with black to chocolaty-brown streaking that transforms the wood into a work of art. The sapwood is frequently incorporated with the heartwood, featuring a creamy vanilla-white smoothness that creates a beautiful contrast.
Ziricote has a very fine marbled texture due to its oily nature and has straight to slightly interlocking grain, which makes for a smooth, presentable shaft with great strength and high uniformity to prevent the likelihood of weak spots. The wood is regarded as very rare and very expensive for a tropical hardwood, but at Tomahawk Lacrosse we think its worth sacrificing some profits to get such a great wood on the market at as reasonable a price as we can afford.
